Protecting Your Xbox 360
By Daniel Durbin
Since the 360's release it has been known to experience some very serious system errors and performance issue that can leave the system inoperable. Because of the seriousness of the problems the 360 has, its vital that owners know the proper ways of keeping their 360 safe and prevent the problems in the first place. Before I explain how to keep your system safe I feel it's important that you understand why the 360 has problems in the first place. This will help you and decrease the chances of you having to fix your 360 later on down the line. If you are already experiencing major problems or the Red Rings of Death, your best bet would be to check out a 360 Repair Guide which will show you how to fix your 360 permanently from all errors.

Overheating

The main cause of most 360 problems are directly related to the 360 having issues with overheating. Microsoft has even released statements that their system has a problem with using more power than is necessary. When the 360 uses more power than is required there is an excessive amount of energy being fueled into the system that it can't withstand, so the system overheats. Getting a little more technical, in order to run and process games the 360 requires the use of two main chips: The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and the Central Processing Unit (CPU). Both of these chips are essential to run your 360 properly, but when they overheat the 360 can't function properly and then you start experiencing problems.

Now keeping what I told you about the chips in mind, when your 360 overheats and you are turning your system on and off these two chips will heat and cool down quickly and this is not good for your system as it causes problems for the motherboard. After a period of time when too much strain is placed on these chips by means of heating and then cooling down the motherboard starts to become affected and will slowly start to bend due to the excessive amount of heat in your case. When the motherboard has bent to much the soldering that keeps all of the vital components together and in place the soldering will start to break and this commonly creates problems like graphical glitches and game freezes. When the soldering has broken or melted completely your system will get the very troublesome Red Rings of Death.

Console adjustment, Air Ventilation, Time on Console

When vital parts of our system are coming loose or coming off our motherboard completely this needs to be stopped. To help ensure you avoid some serious errors make sure your console is in a space that is not enclosed and that your

system is getting proper air ventilation. Many 360 users tend to stack tons of different items on, and around their 360’s which creates more heat for the system. By placing your 360 in an open space where it has nothing on top or around it, it will be able to keep cool enough and not overheat. This baby needs to stay cool at all costs or it’s the Red Rings of Death for You. Now with this and the use of proper ventilation your system will have the necessary requirements to keep itself from breaking down.

A major percentage, around 80% of 360 users have problems with overheating which is primarily the result of the overheating of the itself, improper care, and system over use.The 360 has small fans inside of the console that are meant to ventilate your system and keep it cool while it’s running. The fans inside the 360 will overtime gather dust and clog up the fans, these need to be cleaned out periodically.Remove the dust and you increase the ventilation for your system. Also keep in mind that the longer you play your 360 the hotter it is going to get, and it should not be left on for longer than 24 hours. So it’s highly recommended to not keep your system on for any longer than that–any longer and you’re pushing your odds of having to eventually fix your 360 because you have the Red Rings of Death.

Lower the Chances of Facing the Red Rings of Death.

Apart from proper console placement, ventilation, and not leaving your system on for very long, here are a few additional suggestions you can use to prevent the RROD from hitting your system.

1. Vacuum any and all dust that has stuck itself to the ventilation
fans.

2. The main power cord also requires air ventilation so it's vital that this has room to breath.

3. Make sure your 360 is somewhere where it can get proper air ventilation and is not crowded or confined.

4. Remember not to leave your system on for twenty-four hours.24 hours has even been said to be to long to have your system on.
